When the Civil Partnership Act 2004 was introduced (CPA 2004), it related to two persons of the same sex. However, in December 2019 there was a change in the law which then allowed opposite-sex couples to register for a civil partnership in England and Wales. The Marriage and Civil Partnership Act 2022 was enforced on 27th February 2023 increasing the minimum age for a civil partnership to 18, as opposed to 16.
Civil partnerships have the same legal status as married couples, conversely, civil partnerships may only be ended on death, by final dissolution or nullity order.
