Obtaining probate is the legal right that you will be granted by someone to deal with their estate (money possessions and property) when they die, if you are named as an executor/administrator in that persons will or if there is no will the closest living relative will apply for probate.
Check if probate is needed
The reasons you may not need probate are: if the person who is deceased only had savings, owned shares or money with other people (as that would automatically be passed onto the other owners unless they agreed beforehand that it would go to someone else) and if they were not the sole owner of land or property, but instead were joint tenants.
